My Flea Market Find

June 21, 2011

We went to the flea market Saturday.  It’s an annual flea market that benefits a local church.  Every year we go and stroll the fields and I come home empty-handed.  I usually have mud up to my knees, and in my shoes, and covering my socks, but I don’t buy anything.

This year, though, was unusually dry the few days before and I found this basket.  I actually found two baskets, but the price wasn’t right.  So, I picked the one that I felt would be the easiest to clean, strip and repaint.  Now I need to decide what color to repaint it.

Do I stick with white?  How about red?  What shade of red?  Should it be bright red?  Cranberry red?  How about black?  Once I’ve decided on a color, then I’ll start.

Not bad for five bucks!

  1. Neat basket! I initially thought cranberry red, but the more I look at the basket I’d go with bright red….and a new coat of black for the handle. What are you going to put in your basket?

  2. I suspect color depends on what you will use it for and how it will be displayed. It looks to be in great condition. I’m sure you’ll pick the perfect color. I hope you have a great day.Blessings…Mary

  3. How cool! I love finding neat things like this. I think a brick red would look great. White would be cool, too.

  4. That’s a great deal for $5! I love them!! As far as what color to paint them…well…I guess that would depend on if you’re using them indoors or outdoors and what you’re gonna use them for.

They would make a great accent piece in your house, and they’d also work great as hanging baskets for herbs and/or flowers. You’d just have to buy a liner for them.

If you’re using it indoors, I’d paint them to match the color scheme of the room. If you’re using them outdoors, then any color would be great! If you have a hummingbird feeder outside, you could paint the baskets red and the color would attract hummingbirds to your patio and/or balcony.

Or you could go with neutral green and white. Me…I’d probably paint them in bright colors…lime green, yellow, orange, red, and/or purple. 🙂

    • Sheila-
I do need to figure out what the use will be.

My main problem is if I paint it to go in a room, the room may not stay that way. Or we move. Moving is something that is on our 5 year plan.

I love Kathy’s idea of painting the handle a seperate color.

I also love that orangie pumpkin color, but I’m not thinking it would work well for this basket. I have a lot of earthtones in sections of my house, but I also have shades of blue, purple and grey in other areas.

  5. How cool, Karen. What a great find. Will you post some “after” photos when you decide on the color?
